The De Beers Group of Companies has an opportunity within the Technical Services Department at the Calgary Operational Support Centre for a highly motivated Kimberlite Geologist/Petrologist.  Reporting to the Manager, Technical Services, the incumbent will be involved in all stages of the development of kimberlite models from logging and mapping to petrological interpretation to 3D modelling the kimberlite bodies.  These models support resource development and mine planning activities. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, takes a hands-on approach to their work and is passionate about geosciences as well as being committed to safe working practices and zero harm. This position will require ad hoc travel to Gahcho Kué Mine (in the Northwest Territories) and Victor Mine (in Northern Ontario) as well as other projects.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Developing kimberlite emplacement models through the collection and analysis of multi-source geological data sets through in pit mapping, core logging, thin section and slab petrographic analysis, geochemical and related sampling processes and interpretation of the results to create integrated geological models for use in geological decision making and mine planning;
  • Assisting with audits and reviews of geological models;
  • Providing support and technical expertise to other disciplines and departments;
  • Presenting training sessions to various stakeholders when required;
  • Building strong working relationships with all internal and external stakeholders;
  • Maintaining an in-depth knowledge of the local geology and the impact of local geological conditions on mining operations and exploration projects; and
  • Staying abreast of new technologies and their potential application to kimberlite geology.

Requirements:

  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of geological experience required;
  • Professionally Accredited Geoscientist or eligibility for accreditation;
  • BSc or MSc in Geology with a focus on igneous systems, volcanology and petrology; Knowledge of kimberlite processes would be an advantage;
  • Demonstrated experience in logging drill core, taking analytical measurements (e.g. density and sampling), thin section microscopy, interpretation of large and complex geological data sets, and compiling emplacement and geological models;
  • Advanced knowledge of geological modelling software such as Gems and Leapfrog would be an advantage
  • Excellent planning, time management, problem solving and analytical skills;
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a cross functional business team;
  • Proven commitment to Safety, Health and Environmental standards; and
  • Willingness to travel to potentially remote De Beers mine sites and exploration properties.
