Context:

Discovery and Geosciences (GDG) delivers value for Anglo American via safe discovery of new mineral endowment; delivery of step-change operational geosciences in our mines; and quantification and communication of our Mineral Resources and endowment

Purpose:

To add significant value in Chile, Argentina and Peru (Central Andes) through discovery of superior value ore deposits

Typical Tasks:

  • Ensure that all Discovery activities are undertaken in a safe and sustainable manner
  • Execute Group Discovery’s strategy through planning and coordination of exploration activities and providing direction and support, ensuring adequate resourcing to operating field-based teams in order to maximize the potential for discovery success
  • Develop and actively manage  the project portfolio’s in the Central Andes whilst improving the project pipeline in line with the Group Discovery strategy focusing on both Greenfields and Near Asset exploration. This includes target generation and target testing using innovative ideas and techniques, overseeing the design and implementation of field-based activities, securing and maintaining licence to operate, scanning the business environment, and making recommendations for business opportunities (joint ventures, ground acquisition etc.) in line with Group Discovery strategy 
  • Liaise with the Copper Business to ensure administrative and Near Asset work is conducted effectively, and where appropriate support operational teams with Discovery techniques and information
  • Oversee budgets, contractual obligations and administrative frameworks for the Central Andes
  • Facilitate implementation of SHEC procedures, championing and monitoring SHEC policies and initiatives within the Central Andes in accordance with the Exploration SHEC Way including minimal environmental impact 
  • Lead stakeholder engagement and sustainable development to ensure leading practice is employed and social licenses are maintained within the exploration projects
  • Ensure a fit for purpose team is in place with correct capability and skills. Instill commitment, clear direction, role clarity and responsibility within the Discovery team to achieve high performance

Formal qualifications:

  • Essential: An undergraduate qualification (Bachelors / Honours Bachelors degree or equivalent) in Geosciences with an emphasis on economic geology
  • Desirable: A postgraduate qualification (Masters / Doctoral degree or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (e.g. economic geology, mineral economics) OR a proven track record of extensive practical experience in a role and context of similar complexity

 Role-specific knowledge:

  • A demonstrated thought leader and considered an external expert in the discipline/ field of mineral exploration with a specific focus on porphyry copper deposits and Andean geology
  • Track record of leading project and target generation; translating these into practical initiatives to be implemented and demonstration of successful execution and delivery within greenfields and near-asset exploration.
  • Experience in mining and mineral resources
  • Experience in community and government relations issues, including possible experience with community development programs
  • Knowledge and experience of general management practices in an applied technical environment; e.g. finance (budget, accounting, governance), SHE (systems management and application, practical procedures, leadership), people management
  • International experience is a strong advantage

Safety:

  • Provides a consistent outstanding role model in relation to safety practices with a deep understanding of the importance of safety

Other requirements to perform the work effectively:

  • Travel to sites where required, including international travel.
  • Advanced English and Spanish speaking and writing
